De populaire Amerikaanse talkshowhost David Letterman heeft donderdag in zijn tv- programma toegegeven dat hij seksuele affaires had met vrouwelijke collega's. Hij deed dat omdat iemand hem met die affaires had geprobeerd af te persen voor 1,4 miljoen euro. De afperser is opgepakt.

De presentator vertelde dat hij een brief had ontvangen van een persoon die dreigde zijn seksrelaties met collega's bekend te maken, tenzij hij grof geld betaalde. Hij kwam met de afperser in gesprek door hem een nep-cheque aan te bieden, waarna de man kon worden gearresteerd.

Hoewel de zaak dus is opgelost, maakte Letterman de afpersing en zijn seksuele relaties toch bekend in zijn eigen show. "Ik zeg dit omdat ik alle betrokkenen wil beschermen, zeker mijn familie", legde de talkshowhost uit.

Letterman trouwde dit voorjaar met Regina Lasko, met wie hij sinds 1986 samen is. Het stel heeft ook een zoon.

Het publiek reageerde in eerste instantie lacherig op de bekentenis tijdens de show, omdat ze dachten dat hij een grap maakte. Maar Letterman was juist heel serieus.

	Oef kijken of de jokes van zijn wedding night, de Clintons, A Rod en al die andere in het vervolg nog blijven komen of dat hij het low profile gaat houden. Ik hoop het eerste! PS Hoop dat de betreffende show en de week nog komt hier bij Latebyte!

Copies of Birkitt's diary, as well as emails between her and Letterman, were reportedly the basis of the blackmail package allegedly placed in Letterman's car by Halderman.
